theglobeandmail.com — Dazed and confused after more than 15 hours of travel, unable to communicate in English and scared because he couldn't find his mother, Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski was jolted by a taser just 24 seconds after being confronted by police in Vancouver International Airport.

Jesus Christ, people! When will you learn? Usually, when someone is acting angry and irrational (Hopped up on drugs? Just plain angry? There's no way to tell within a few seconds!) you need to immobilize them before they can do something like possibly pull out a knife, gun, or other weapon that can jeopardize YOUR life! How do you do that? Ding ding! TAZER!!!!To the idiot who said "Fight hand to hand': Yeah! Great idea! Get close enough for someone who could be possibly stronger, bigger, and angrier than you to take a swing at you too! Besides, there have been instances of police who DID do this, and the cops just end up getting sued for excessive force. At least a taser won't do permanent damage %99 of the time.To the idiot who said "Take away tazers": Yeah! Even better idea! Let's just get rid of them so the only other option is to SHOOT someone! Great thinking, Einstein. For someone who is so against police, you are ready and willing to give them shooting rights under any circumstances. For some of you, yes, you are right. Tazers are only supposed to be used as a safe alternative to a gun, but the situation isn't always black and white. So I beg of all Digg users, PLEASE get the WHOLE story before you post. It is so hard to get a neutral political balance on any news site, and this left-wing site is no different. Take every story you see here with a grain of salt.

All of you people are so naive. Get out into the world and open your eyes. None of you have obviously lived in a third world country. Try growing up NOT in America. Newsflash, EVERYONE wants to come here. Do you know how many people have sacrificed and died to make America what it is, yet you spit on it like it's nothing. As I said, you need to see the world. You all seem to hate police, hate authority mainly, hate the US. alright then, what the hell are you still doing here then. Leave. Sure the US is FAR from perfect, we have lots of problems. But let me tell you, as someone who has been to many different countries, and has spent more of my life outside the US then in, I THANK GOD that he blessed me with my American background. So for all of you who just wanna complain and point fingers and listen to the folks on CNN and the politicians who wanna make us feel guilty for living in the land of the free, I'll pay for your ticket out of here, matter of fact, how bout a one way ticket to the middle east. I've been there, you'll be singing a different song real quick. Bon Voyage.

Spudster, I'd agree with you here. Taser is a "push a button when situation X happens, and it inflicts maximum non-lethal pain" device. A nightstick actually needs to be swung by the cop with selected force -- it requires more conscious effort, and therefore cops would be more careful in using it, than they would with a taser.
