This is true. Sleep deprivation can lead to total loss of symptoms for depression, but the symptoms return after a decent sleep so it's not so useful as a therapy. Also, most anti-depressants suppress REM sleep. Taken together, there is some evidence that suppression of REM sleep is responsible for the efficacy of anti-depressants.
