dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com — The world has seen the first international conference on manufacturing meat. This is the process, tested so far only at laboratory scale, of growing pork, chicken, or beef through cell culture in vats instead of raising and slaughtering animals.

as a meat eater, i think this is a GREAT idea! then there would be no even moral objections. clean, completely cruelty free and can be engineered to be high in protein, low in fat and packed with omega 3 fatty acids and delicious.... other than cost, i can't think of a reason NOT to do this. and you wouldn't grow a whole animal... it would be like cloning a heart or something, you just clone the muscle mass/tissue. or organ meat or whatever... no fear of boneless animals living their lives in bacta tanks or something.i think there is a natural order to the world and so i don't philosophically have a problem with killing animals to eat. lions do it. we do it. it's fine. but i also think that animals are much more cognizant than scientists give them credit for (like how a scientist talks about a dog's emotions and then what you see when you come home to your pooch) and it seems like they realize this more and more everyday.anyhoo, i have no moral/philosophical problem with killing an animal to eat, but i know that i would have a hard time doing it. i happen to think most animals i eat are quite cute and i'd really really have a hard time killing one myself.that being the case, if cloning meat and having the remaining animals on earth able to be left alone and live a natural life without fear of being exploited for man's consumption.... i think that's just really great. and more - civilized.

Sounds like the entire extinction of a species... unless they put them in zoos as attractions and s**t.

great idea. i really hope it happens. its not that i care about cruelty to the animals. humans are omnivores; we eat meat. i also think we should focus on and stop the cruelty to humans first. meat takes a ridicules amount of resources to produce. its just not sustainable and we are going to kill ourselves with gluttony.
