ilounge.com — Everyone's been waiting for a "widescreen video iPod" for years - is time running out for Apple to release one? Editors and readers offer their views on whether a 6G iPod is needed now or too late, with competing devices from Sony, Microsoft, and even Apple (iPhone) coming this year. What do you think?

They may make a widescreen iPod, but knowing how Apple does things, I'm assuming the iPhone is going to be their widescreen iPod for a couple of months, then they'll release just an iPod that's widescreen. It's kind of like how in order to get a black Macbook or iPod you have to go all out.

i haven't looked at alpine headunits in a while. FYI, the last time i did look, it was limited to controlling 256 objects only. also, i have my ipod running into the RCA inputs on the back of my headunit, and it sits in a dock designed specifically for my car (proclipsusa).regardless, i COULD do that, but that would mean in order for me to use my ipod safely, i'd have to incur another expense. f**k that

i think apple has been stalling this whole widescreen ipod thing for so long because of video format. think of it! they are going to have to reformat all of the video to an optimized widescreen format. and where does that leave all the people who already bought "desperate housewives" for the current ipod? are they going to have to buy it again for the new widescreen ipod?

@grizFirst of all; I need as much space on my iPod as I can get, I have a TON of music. I do live sound at some venues and a wide variety in music really comes in handy. I also go on a decent amount of long trips and like to have it all just for the off chance that I'm going to want to listen to something random. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music and I love it all. So with that said, I can use every gigabyte I can get. And no, I do not keep more stuff on my iPod that I keep on my machine, that would be stupid and I'm not stupid. I also back everything up on a 250GB external hard drive. I do a lot of media stuff and it's not too far fetched to need 60gb of space on an iPod.

A good friend of mine has been really unfortunate with his iPods. He got a 4G around the same time I got my 2nd gen mini (i.e. about 2 years ago) and he's had nothing but grief with it. He had to have it replaced twice, both times he was still within warranty and they gave him an entirely new one. It finally gave up and died a while ago so he got a 5G.All the while, my mini has been working perfectly. I've grown accustomed to having only 3.7GB of space (my total library is ~70GB), and it's handled so much abuse it's ridiculous. I've literally lost count on how many times I've dropped it. It has a few dents and the paint has worn off the hold switch, but it still works just as well as the day I bought it.I guess they didn't build the self-destruct chip into the minis?

Can Apple keep stalling a 6th generation iPod? Well, first of all, what is the rush to get a 6th gen iPod, for those who've just recently gotten the 5th or 5.5 gen iPods? How could people have been waiting for "years" when the original video hasn't even been out for 2 years?I do agree that a wide-screen pod would be nice, and perhaps something with more RAM so that batteries would last longer. If I had known originally that the 30GB 5th gen pod I got would contain half the RAM of the 60gig, and I assume the 80 has this too, I would have waited and opted for a 60gig or 80gig iPod.Secondly. I have a question to ask, has anybody compared the 5th gen screens with the 5.5gen screens? Is there really a noticeable difference. The screens are supposedly 60% brighter, however, I've found the original to be superb. I do agree the video playback is extremely great, given that you use a decent codec with relatively high resolution and bit-rate.All in all. Why rush a 6th gen to the market when they are only just perfecting the 5th gen. I wouldn't call it stalling, and I think my 5th gen is still good for another while. Battery life is still great. Keep up the good work, Apple! Thanks all for reading my post.RJB
