I'll agree. Moving the sidebar up to a horizontal bar at the top freed up a bunch of space for them.Looks like they're going the route of Apple/Google for general aesthetic, as many are these days.
CNN's default text size is even smaller and wraps even worse at *my* default text size than the previous design did. I might as well stop reading CNN.com. CNN doesn't seem to understand users can and will change type sizes. A good design considers how a page expands and contracts. It's a shame CNN did such a poor job with this redesign.(FYI, perfect vision, 1024x768, 17" monitor.)
No, what makes CNN a bunch of commies is when they post a news story that start out with the lines - "Be worried, be very worried. The climate is crashing, and global warming is to blame." Headlines like this take us away from having an intelligent debate on the topic and do more harm than good when trying to convince rational people that global warming is real. I don't care if they're quoting Time Magazine or not. They still have a responsibility to be level headed and have some journalistic integrity.
Like the redesign of their TV theme, this does have a simple/elegant aesthetic, and is at the same time simpler but somehow more effective than the older, blocky, too-boring style they used to have.
It's nice that they're moving away from table based design, but not completly there yet. And I still think they try to cram too much information onto one page.Nevertheless, a step in the right direction :).

I am in the process of switching all of my sites to wider format. I am glad to see it is catching on.
