news.bbc.co.uk — The CIA has for the first time publicly admitted using the controversial method of "waterboarding" on terror suspects. CIA director Michael Hayden told Congress however that it had only been used on three people, and not at all for the past five years.

I hate when people use this BS 'slippery slope' argument. When is your scenario going to play out? 5 years? 10 years? 1000 years? The answer is never. The same argument is used against euthanasia .. "Inevitably our hospitals will start euthanizing healthy people".

Maybe, just maybe, your dumb ass and a few thousand other people are alive today because of waterboarding. If you want to commit suicide, go right the hell ahead, but leave the rest of us out of it. OK?

Suggestion #1Remove our dependence on foreign oil. By continuing to buy oil from the middle east, we are essentially funding countries and regimes that are opposed to us. Monies spent on research into energy efficiencies, energy conservation and alternative energies would have been a better investment in America's safety than the Iraq war. The primary reason for our trade deficit is foreign oil. An unfortunate side effect of all this is that they now have substantial positions in our stock market bought with the money we paid them. Suggestion #2Fully (not just pay lip-service) to support the incorporation of a Palestinian State. Until the Iraq war, that was the main issue that the Arab world had against us. Our undying (and sometimes absurd) support of Israel has not served us well in this regard."Beating" the terrorists through force is a never-ending proposition. As soon as you kill the leaders, they become martyrs. Others take their place. The unavoidable civilian casualties and collateral damage only give them more reasons to fight us. The way to win - take away their reasons for fighting and their funding.

Wasn't it Hammurabi's Code "an eye for an eye?" Allowing torture tactics, no matter how "humane" they are is probably not the most effective way of getting information. It provides a reason for al-Qaeda to further demonize the US and legitimize their continued usage of torture. If I were being tortured, I might simply make up an elaborate half-truth to stop them from torturing me further. But, the Catch-22 is this, why would I really have an incentive to tell the truth? My captors are already torturing me, so who is to say that they won't go further? It's also been made clear that if these were high-level al-Qaeda members, then they have probably already resigned themselves to dying for their cause. I also think it's quite ironic that "waterboarding" sounds like a euphemism. The term "waterboarding" has a positive connotation. It may evoke thoughts of happy summertime activities. "Half drowning," which is probably more accurate isn't the term they use. Interesting...

Too bad he didn't do anything to protect the men and women on the USS Cole.
