I love all the paranoid people on Digg. They always assume there is a conspiracy theory behind everything. My company recently banned thumb drives, too, but that was because security professionals have suddenly become aware of the existence of trojan thumb drives. For example:http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/04/25/usb_malwar ...The guy who runs the security at our company just gave a big speech about various compluter security issues including trojan thumb drives. He metioned that it was discussed at a recent security conference. I'm guessing that is why this is suddenly a hot topic, because it's certainly not a new issue.

Software is dependent upon hardware, not vice-versa. The hardware can very well do whatever it pleases without caring one whit about the software.
