creativecommons.org— NIN's Ghosts I-IV was and is available legally from day 1 of release under CC BY-NC-SA and on P2P sites, yet is Amazon's #1 best selling MP3 album for all of 2008.

I echo The NIN Hotline in that this is unbelievably fantastic because people could legally download this for FREE if they wanted. But no, they were willing to pay. Why? Well, maybe they weren't aware of the licensing details that you could download it for free, or maybe they just wanted support the artist. If you have desirable content people will pay, no matter what it is. What a positive sign this is for music in general. Also it's worth noting (as The NIN Hotline did) that this type of album would never have been released under a traditional label. 36 instrumental tracks... not a chance.
