fak3r.com — Any laptop I buy is going to run Linux only, and with the announcements from HP, IBM/Lenovo and Dell about their Linux support for laptops (some even pre-installed), I knew I’d finally have choices to consider. In the end I bought a great system for a great price, that Debian or Ubuntu will be compatible with, and will be proud to call home.

My main point to posting this is that I talk to people all the time that spend 1500-200$ for a laptop, thinking that's what they cost, when something like this would do MORE than what they need for less than 1/2 the cost. Throw Linux into the mix and you have freedom as well...but that's fodder for another post!

Hey, great article! I appreciate the link to lesswatts.org as well. Since I guess most Linux users are cost-conscious, it would be great to stay in the loop what the cheapest notebooks are that run all Linux desktop goodies sufficiently well (esp. Compiz Fusion). Anybody knows a dedicated site for that?

Not yet, I want to work on this creating a chart of what desktop and options eat up what % of power vs running Openbox with no compiz stuff. Of course when you get into screen brightness much of it is predicated on the user's preferences - still having info on what 'hacks' give the best bang for the buck - and how to configure it that way, would be sweet. Heck, make it an installable prefs app, click here, click there, apply - bingo, power savings! ;)
