nytimes.com — The Bush administration is set to issue a regulation on Friday that would enshrine the coal mining practice of mountaintop removal. The technique involves blasting off the tops of mountains and dumping the rubble into valleys and streams.

I use electricity generated via wind turbine. In fact, most of my county does (Madison County, NY). 1/3 of my county's wind turbines are within 2 miles of my house, and I wouldn't mind if they built ten times as many. They're quiet, clean, and even a little beautiful. Not to mention that the bonds that bought them are now paid off, and electricity is hella cheap here now.

@MacEnvy. Is all your electricity generated via wind turbines? No, so you still use traditional sources as well. Besides that, I really am glad you use the electricity from wind turbines. I happen to live within 5 miles of the largest wind turbines in Ohio, but you have to pay extra for it, so no thanks. Maybe when I start my career the extra cost won't be so significant. So, the new GE slow(er) turning 3 blade design doesn't kill birds as much, but there is a problem with large amount of bats being killed by these. So if you really want ten times as many, be prepared for some unintended consequences.

He is looking for a legacy, let that be it. Instead of having his face carved on the side of a mountain, hewill enshrine his name forever on the nightmarish landscape he legalized.

If people in WV (where I grew up for 17 years) want to do something about the issue, why not looking at throwing the "King Of Pork" Byrd out on his ass. Yes, I know...wishful thinking as it will never happen in a million years but that's what needs to happen. I always looked in shock & disgust driving thru WV as a kid at how badly they were damaging the beautiful landscape with nothing to show for it. The economy (besides the wealthy areas in Northern & Eastern WV) has been stagnate through it's entire history.

Hi, I think there is a big difference between allowing a new practice and putting a stop to an exiting one.http://www.niton.com/
