theonion.com — CORNISH, NH - In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud.

A sequel was blocked by Salinger some years back.... Thank God.

"...of which Salinger would have approved."

I've always loved The Onion precisely because of just how much truth is in their stories.

Personally, I don't "love" his work, but I see the merit in Catcher. It's a book that'll piss you off something fierce if you read all the way through. The "protagonist" is a despicable shell of a human that you only want to scream at. You just want to jump out of your seat, grab Holden by the neck and smack the crap out of him for being the embodiment of the most hate-able personality on the planet. Seriously, look at him: he is by far his own worst enemy. He sabotages himself, and blames the world for it. He calls everyone a "phony", only so he can deal with the fact that they all can't stand his s**t. He is a douchebag.I entirely get why people hate Salinger, especially considering most of those who hate him only read Catcher. But it isn't a bad book. It's a book that you can hate, sure. But the hatred doesn't come from the s**tiness of the book, but rather the placement of a total douche in the spot where a protagonist traditionally goes.

I didn't think much of "Catcher in the Rye" in high school, but was amazed by it ten years later. Having engaged texts at the university level simply made CITR better. In particular, realizing that Holden was _not_ some whiny teenager was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had reading.
