indeed. The Republican party was formed on an abolitionist stance. Lincoln was not their first choice, in fact he was their fourth choice to run -- he wasn't great about sticking to party platform. His letters indicate that one of his first ideas about ending slavery was to send all persons that were once from Africa back there -- he was talked out of it ultimately (and to his credit, without much fight). Truth is, he didn't think slavery was right, but he didn't desire free persons of color in his town either.
