Where did it say it was mostly being used by criminals. I myself was a user of e-gold for perfectly legitimate reasons. It is a shame that people feel that wanting privacy automatically makes someone a criminal.

Thanks Itchyassh**e, thanks for being able to read.And as for "Why should anyone obey laws that violate your unalienable rights?", I would obey unfair laws mostly to stay out of jail. That was almost my entire point. I think you must have misread much more than the last paragraph.

If you want a "money" system which is nearly impervious to the rise of money changers, banks, taxation, etc. then we'll have to do away with money entirely, and go back to bartering.Money is so ingrained in our society that I've seen some real "gee whiz" moments, when people don't "get it." A great example is, well, the means I'm using to publish this comment. I'm at work, times are slow but speeding back up, but still slow so I have time for this. Here's the thing about our internet service: In exchange for advertising in our newspaper, our ISP provides internet service. I have had to jump in to conversations between my boss and the advertising department when my boss tries to leave out the ISP's ads out because "we run 'em for free!" But boy, does he get mad if the email service is sluggish! His notion is that because money doesn't change hands for that ad, it's FREE, even though it's an even trade. The point is, even though no MONEY changes hands, the service is NOT provided to us FOR FREE, no more than my grandpa was getting groceries FOR FREE in the 40s and 50s, in exchange for chicken eggs.I guess all I'm getting at is that I have a minor issue with the notion that only gold and silver are money, and that any commerce not involving silver or gold is malinvestment. Other systems can also be sound, IMHO.

Well, it's entirely possible for ANY system to fail.Personally, to me there are only two major constants in the world: Change is inevitable, and that anything we humans create will fail.

Agreed. In fact, it's possible that e-gold may fail yet, but I hope it doesn't. For those who do, I ask, "Why? -- Nobody's forcing you to accept the stuff and I'm forced by 'legal tender' laws to accept & use papermoney!" The e-gold system was designed to outlast the US dollar, but given sufficient attacks from the government the dollar could well outlast e-gold. My collection of gold (nice coins and a number of far more beautiful nuggets!). Other humans will *always* covet the yellow metal. They always have, even though the effect is less widespread these days because many people have never held an ounce of gold in their hands.The only problem with my collection is that I like it more than I like most other things. But not at least one thing -- eating. Gold isn't an investment, though. It's more like insurance. As well as something to enjoy if you happen to like looking at the stuff, like me.

perhaps you're not aware but those policies and regulations already exist (perhaps your comment wasn't sarcastic..?). There are stringent export regulations on processor technology to states whos use of current processor technology is deemed dangerous.This guy specifically figured he was above regulation and is now paying for it, as he should.
