howtoforge.com — This is a detailed description about how to set up a Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) based server that offers all services needed by ISPs and hosters: Apache web server (SSL-capable), Postfix mail server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, DNS server, FTP server, MySQL server, POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc.

Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it?

For f**ks sake, I'm a supporter of OSS but this is taking the piss, LAMP not UAMP, people are acting as if ubuntu is the be all and end all of linux.

Good article, but I'd much rather select the automatic LAMP installation which avoids probably most of the work being done in the article.I certainly respect the idea of having micro-managed control over a server installation, but truth be told if that is a real deciding factor for me I'd avoid a distro like Ubuntu all together. I'm not bashing Ubuntu mind you (I love it) but there are more "hard core" distros out there that are even better at micro-manging what gets installed for you - like Gentoo or Slackware. Again, this is would be my approach but ONLY if I needed a "minimalistic" server.@seuaniuI'm not sure I agree with your statement about an administrator account. Exploits that target administrator are windows based, any kind of enumeration/use of this account will likely fail because they target IIS or windows services/flaws. Simply having this account won't make you more of a target than any other server - it's not like the server is going to be broadcasting "hey, I have an account called Administrator" and any system with decent security measures/apps will not give this away in brute force attempts (i.e. typing administrator with a bad password is not going to say "you got the username right but your password is wrong").

Actually, you'd be better off using key based logins and disabling password based logins.
