@Madh2orathe's not talking about Christmas... he's talking about December 31st, the day which skype has promised free nationwide calling until. there's no guarantees of what happens after that..
whats a good solution for the standards stuff. is it Asterisk. Also can anyone provide me with the link to the Skypmate software so I can read about it. I googled it and the link appeared dead. Is it still supported ?
States like California are trying to pass legislation to force VOIP services to have instant 911 integration -- you'll most likely see that sooner than later.
@FuzzyCat:"You really didn't even bother googling did you."Why should I bother googling? You, my dear cat, are the one yalping about standards. I'm accepting Skype - the system with over 5 million active users - as the de facto standard for this subsection of the industry. The responsibility rests on your hairy shoulders to provide examples. It's not up to me to do your legwork.
OK I know you guys don't want to hear this :) but even if I love these articles how to reuse old stuff and build something trivial I want to notice one thing. If you have enough IQ then youcan figure out everything in this setup without any help or howto and if not then better if you don't do it cuz accidently you the wrong cable and end up in the graveyard :) Damn it's not better than "how to setup a jukebox with winamp", sorry but my 8 year old sis could do this, sorry Andrew but u got owned.
Don't forget to calculate in the $10-18/mo. (depending on your locality) to keep a box running 24/7. When you consider the energy costs, one of the VoIP providers that uses a lower-power box may actually cost less, and you can just wire on the router/adapter to your existing extension wiring, provided you disconnect your house from the phone company at the protector box.
Good stuff, but a bit complex for me, a Windows use, I prefer to use PrettyMay call center for Skype which is a Skype add on, with it, to set up a Skype phone system will be extremely easy, highly recommed.http://www.prettymay.net

You can save yourself the hassel because there are computer-free skype handsets that connects directly to a voip router. http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2148056/skype-cuts-computer
