Balloney! Where did you get that? You need to check out some of the potato gun websites who've done quite a bit of research. It depends on the propellant used. If you're using hairspray, which can be quite effective, it's legal. If you use ether, or another highly volatile propellant, you might be in a grey area.

At least it isn't in Real Player. I think everyone can agree on that. lol

If you make one, please use pressure rated (i.e. schedule 40) PVC and do not over fill it. And please don't shoot anyone with it, you will do serious damage. As far as the aerosol powered ones (set off by an igniter from a BBQ grill ) -- It won't explode if you put too much Aquanet in there. In fact, it may not even ignite. All that hairspray tends to displace the air (and oxygen) it needs to burn. When you make one, it takes a while to figure out how much hairspray to use in order to get the best distance -- too much is just as bad as not enough. And anyone who has actually made one (not just read about them) would know this. ;)

I spent about 60 bucks on all the materials. I'm new to building this sorta thing. The long PVC pipe was a total of around 14 bucks, and the ball valve can range anywhere beween 16 and 33 bucks. I purchased it for 16 bucks at a true value hardware store... which was a price mistake (marked 26 bucks). Home Depot had a 2 inch valve for 36 bucks. Home depot didn't have the schrader valve, but a smaller hardware store did. A shcrader valve is air pressure valve... it took me forever to figure this out. If you can't find it at a hardware store, check an auto store or tire shop, they might have it. I was able to purchase all the piping and everything else from home depot. It took me about 2 hours to build... I had some leaks where the endcap goes and had to purchase some epoxy to stop the leaks. Attempting to launch baloons didn't work to well as they blew up due to all the pressure. Other items didn't launch anywhere near the 500 feet. Looking at the video, you can see that they also put something in the PVC pipe, like a peice of cork or something that the air pushes up and in return launches the item sitting on top of it.

You need to put a sabot in the barrel. AKA, any item that makes a seal with the barrel and traps the air so that the object will launch. Pringles cans work optimally. Plastic cups and tennis ball cans also work very well. But without this, nothing will shoot anywhere. The videos had to be taken offline since Digg.com users burned 318 gigs of bandwidth that we didn't have, but they will be reposted on YouTube or other host.
