How is this a surprise? You can already purchase it pre-compiled with a nice GUI (Crossover-Mac), so it kind of goes without saying it was possible.

There is a specific ubuntu app (baskets notepads) which I would love to run on OSX w/o parallels. wondering if there is a relativly simple way to complie and run gnome and or kde apps on osx

A port is not the proper type of Wine to use while attempting this kind of work. A light Chablis will suit the mood much better and is less likely to clash with your palete...or are we talking about something else?
