bizjournals.com — Republican presidential candidate John McCain cashes his monthly Social Security checks despite calling the federal program "a disgrace." "I'm receiving benefits," McCain said, but added, "the system is broken." In 2007, he received benefits of $23,157 from Social Security, approximately $1,930 a month.

Windows is broken, yet many of you still use it. You take advantage of some of its benefits even though you'll admit its not working right.

Waiting2awake, I'm one of those poor saps being taxed to pay for it. It's a flawed system, but McCain still deserves it just as much as everyone else.kingnothing1, perhaps it is selfish. But following the logical that some people shouldn't get what they put in, I say some people should be able to opt out altogether.mleh, that doesn't sound like social security benefits.

I disagree.Social Security is more like four elderly people telling you to put 12.4% of your income in THEIR piggy bank. With S.S., You're not investing in your own future, you're investing in somebody else's and hoping that somebody younger will come along someday and do the same for you.

You pay into the system, you get it back. I dont care what your income level is.

I have stated a specific opinion, not rhetoric, without being belligerent. However, the reality is that people do get dugg down for expressing an opinion that doesn't align with the overall user community; especially if the opinion is a bit socially grating. I was stating opinion based on observations. By the way I never mentioned the person you mentioned in quotes. I have no idea what his opinion on the subject is and frankly it doesn't matter as he is not in my jurisdiction for office; nor is he a viable candidate.

cwmather - i'm not worried about mine, i dont plan on getting any. It's nice to see that McCain donates, a lot of rich people do. But if he is rich enough to donate all that money back, why take it in the first place. See you all are attacking me for saying what he's already doing, albeit in a different way.

I think the point is not so much that he doesn't have a right to take SS funds, but rather the irony of his statements about it juxtaposed with the fact that he does receive funds. And it is hard to make an argument that he shouldn't take the money, but if anything, its even harder to suggest he really needs it.

But do you have upwards of $100 million?

The money should go back into the SS system, not to charity.Isn't there a big issue with SS running out of money? The point is that he shouldn't be cashing the checks in the first place. He should refuse them, as is an option.

>> Social Security is *NOT* a retirement plan.Umm, as implemented, ya it is. Why do you think it costs so freakin much?Because _everyone_ who paid in is entitled to it?Why do you think conservatives rail against it so much, demanding reform? It's little more than a money funnel to the richest segment of society: the elderly.
