I'm fairly surprised with all the negativity here. Usually diggers are pro liberty. I suppose this is just another case where most people are for govt force and against freedom.

Sure, a number would work as a unique identifier (in fact, most countries have a Social Security Number or analogue that serves this purpose), but that loses the "memorability" aspect. Besides, it's seen as "cold" to have a child whom you refer to as "12309CE54005".If I'm in a room full of people and I want to quickly address someone from across the room, a name is the best way to do that. If I need to talk to someone else about that person, a name is a simple way to identify the person to whom I'm referring.
