theregister.co.uk — Researchers are claiming a breakthrough which could revolutionize how microchips are manufactured. They say that they have a new way to induce silicon to oxidize. They use UV lamps to get the oxide to form by breaking apart oxygen molecules on the material's surface. Cheaper chips could be the result

UV to make oxides? This sounds pretty awesome considering that UV and deep-UV processes are already quite common in microfabrication. This gets my digg!

I don't imagine this will reduce costs very much since most of the cost of a chip lies in the design, prototyping, and testing stages of chip manufacturing.

Apple has plenty of help for lowering their prices (the awesome labor practices at Hon Hai, for instance). It's just that they don't feel the need to.

this could be big news for solar panels as well, because the limiited number of mfr plant buildings is what is holding up supply. now the market is geared towards chips and cells are on the backburner.
