I beg to disagree... PS3 was a long time in the making. Its is a great system and your one system world is not a part of that. Competition is good. It drives prices down and the end result we get 300 dollar Blu-ray players within 2-3 years.
If they'd put in a regular DVD drive, cut costs to Xbox360 levels, and offered BR as an external drive, I bet Sony would have launched much earlier and sold millions by now. It could have sucker punched the 360 and the Wii.
Couldn't agree more, at the moment the PS3 is beyond my means and an add-on drive would have been much better.I think the main issue with another format war is Sony's terrible track record with introducing brand new formats. Ever since Phillips and Sony invented the CD, the only mild bit of success they had was with the mini-disc and that died over night with the arrival of mp3 / ipods etc.Betamax? SACD? UMD? Memory stick? I'm sure there are more that have lost Sony money.
I think what SONY should do to help them get back into the market is Get rid of the Basic model and the Premium model and make it just a Premium model which contains blu-ray for enthusiasts of the Blu-Ray format and then another model without Blu-Ray but with a way to add Blu-Ray later on, this way maybe a few years down the line, If Blu-Ray takes off they can add it like the XBox 360. Plain and simple most gamers do not have a 1080P TV in their house right now that is what the main problem is for these formats. SONY should've just made a normal DVD ROM with blu ray option and then they wouldn't be getting bashed as much for forcing a format down people's throats. But on the other hand I would still like to see how the PS3 does considering EA said they have only unlocked 20 percent of the system's potential.
Imagine if Sony went with DVD DL instead of Bluray. Think about that for a moment, what would the last year be like?- PS3 could have been released a year earlier (Cell might have caused a delay until Spring'06) and be running second generation PS3 games now side by side with the Xbox360.- PS3 would be only around $400-$450 in stead of $600- PS3's lower price would have assured a larger install base- PS3's *potentially* larger install base would attract more 3rd party *exclusive* titles instead of them bailing for the more economical crossplatform release market.- PS3 would have nearly double the data transfer rate from the optical disc with DVD DL.- PS3's large 60GB could cache the second and third disc of games needing over 8.5GB. (The Bluray games are being cached now to make up for long load times from Bluray. So what's the difference if you use one slow disc or many fast discs? nothing when you disc cache onto a large 60GB drive)The PS3 would be kicking the Xbox360 in the console balls if it weren't for Bluray. The Playstation name is just *that* powerful, but let's face it, Sony practically sold out its Playstation fans for the chance to dominate the HD disc market with their own format. If Sony can pull this off and make the PS3 dominate, they deserve to be as arrogant as they are.
@ bobzibublast time i checked Toshiba owns the rights to HD-DVD but I may be wrongI personally dislike Blu-ray and sony's decision with the Ps3 because it made a console cost more then needed when there's no urgent reason for video game developers to have 100 gigs of data on a disc, if the movie half of the console is going to a add a significant price increase, the make the DVD,HD-DVD,Blu-ray drive an add on for those you want the HD movies also, don't make it so gamers who just want the console to so as to play the exclusive titles for that console have to pay extra.
Wow, i'm amazed at how many whiners there are out there. the prevailing sentiment here is that BluRay was a mistake because it delayed the PS3 and made it cost more. So what? It's out now so stop bitching about what they "should have done". It seems, to me, that Sony bet on the future. Rather than giving consumers what they want "right f'in now", they said "OK, but here's some more". Yeah, it pushed the release date (seriously, did it really kill you to wait a year?), and bumped the initial costs up (okay, a lot), but it's now the same price as a 360 (for the 40gb). Considering what the box does (it's not just a game console y'know) it's a friggin bargain; BluRay player, media center and a pretty damn impressive game console. Oh, and controller vibration? Seriously? You miss that? It's coming.By the way, BluRay seems to be winning the format war. Have you even looked at Digg the past few days?Don't get me wrong, I hate big business as much as the next guy. I just happen to hate fanboys more.(okay, bury me down now!)
