I think that they are announcing this to stave off the masses leaving WoW or getting excited for other games. They are probably many many years away from anything solid.
I doubt it will be an mmo. If blizzard tried to release another it would cannibalize on their current wow market with people leaving wow to join the starcraft mmo. The only mmo I could see from blizzard with starcraft is planetscape style. It seems more probable that it's going to be a hard-core rts. And to be honest I really hope so with how awesome starcraft and warcraft 3 are. And finally they can release a 3d incarnation of starcraft while fixing some of the problems with that game. My main beefs with starcraft were1. Way too many workers. Mineral mines can support like 30 workers a piece and you have to build a billion workers to be good. Cap this like they did in warcraft 3.2. No limit to the amount of units to be selected at once.3. Start players with more resources so they can make a building right off the bat. This would cut off a good 45 needless seconds from the game spent building up. Take this from starcraft.4. Incoorporate the match-making from warcraft 3. The match-making in warcraft 3 was awesome and fair most of the time. 8)5. Incoorporate warcraft 3-like AI. Now that was some sick AI and was really impressive. This would honestly make starcraft into an awesome 3d game that would really be a worthy successor to starcraft. Blizzard just has to keep the gameplay relatively the same and just basically improves the overall concept. I'm thinking dawn of war type gameplay but balanced and good.
To all of you asking for Diablo 3, it won't happen, check out Flagship studios: www.hellgatelondon.comThats from the guys who started Diablo and left to make their own studio.
Blizzard succeeds by leveraging the best functionality and features from existing game genres then adding their polish and IP to make it a hit. I guess you could call them the kings of video game "mash ups". Considering the latest developments in the gaming world, the two directions I see that make sense for Blizzard are RPG + RTS or FPS + RPG.For example (pure speculation here), leveraging the infinitely stalled Starcraft Ghost's assets and game engine, moving it to the PC, and adding MMO+RPG character development (taking the lead from Hellgate London).
You're right. Nobody will play more than one MMO at a time. I don't think Blizzard should wait until WoW dies down, though, because that would give an opportunity to competing MMOs. If Blizzard times everything right, it should be able to release MMO2 (whatever it is) when its WoW players are just bored enough to switch, but not bored enough to quit Blizzard altogether and move on to some other company's game.
Did anyone notice this job add in the Top Secret Section?http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/art-lead-3d-environ ...Quote:"Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of Diablo and Diablo II, is looking for a lead 3D environment artist skilled at creating models and texture maps for both architectural and natural environments."Why mention diablo? Coincidence? Its not a WoW MMO so they dont mention WoW, Starcraft is getting love atm and Diablo hasn't been hugged for a long time now.So I'd bet my cash on a Diablo MMO since it's Next-Gen and all are thinking of a WoW like approach i bet they are thinking of a Next-Gen Approach.I see a lot of focus on Collision maybe actual real time weapon collision like slicing exactly where u cut a enemy + wii like controller? wouldn't that be funky?I'm almost certain its a Diablo MMO there would be no other reason why they would put that in the advert.Whatever they will do with it i can't w8 to see what they come up with.
And since wow already has demons i don't see the point of your comparison. That just sounds like WoW(With Demons) + Demons isn't that like WoW+2xDemons ;/Diablo was always different even if they used same character like goblins they where different.
