They are pretty tight lipped about what they are doing now but we share memories of our service in the seventies and how much different it is today with the advatanges of night vision and laser sighting. What we do discuss is in generalities. In general their mission is seek and destroy. They have certain objectives and carry them out skillfully.
The fact that it's possible to "compare" mercs in the employ of the US taxpayer to Iraqi antigovernment militias proves my point. And if you really want to compare, what has the Sadr bloc done that you think caused as much damage to US international reputation as Abu Ghraib or Nissour Square has? Or which damaged the military effort as much as the seige of Fallujah, which was arguably as responsible for sparking the insurgency as any other single post-Operation-Iraqi-Liberation event. Speaking of Abu Ghraib, you seem to have a serious misconception of what happened there. The interrogation procedures revealed in the leaked photos were all explicitly approved and "choreographed" by the Bush/Cheney White House. Specifically OVP.
As long as they have the forces for hire a variety of nations will be willing to hire and provide hardware. BUT that being said, yes they are a danger to freedom and have become a force to be reckoned with.
