I think Cohen created something that, well, accept it or not, transformed the way we transfer large files across the Internet. It's not his fault what others do with his software. It's not like he even reverse engineered or cracked some protection and we're trying to argue his case, he well and truly released an open source program that revolutionized file sharing and P2P.
The entire article is based on a false premise: that the search for "Prison Break" will get 29 copyright infringing videos of the series. If you can be bothered to actually do that search, you should note that none of the files is large enough to contain any kind of video. So, what was the point of the article, again?
I know the title/desc is screwballed, but your statement makes an interesting point.Obviously, if bittorrent was being used for legal purposes, which is what piracy apologists always harp on, then this would be a good thing.Instead, most of the users saw that, flipped, and make the statement of "well, why teh hell would you use that, use ". Which obviously shows that, what is bittorrent good for? Allowing kids to steal.. oh I'm sorry, gotta avoid the 'its not stealing, its infringement' police, download movies, software, music that they didn't pay for. When a new Linux ISO comes out, bittorrent rocks, instead of hammering a server, you can get a nice steady download. That's a good use. More sites should have filters in place, so that bittorrent can shake off the teenage pirate crowd and get some legit press.
