If it's really a cure or a breakthrough, you do see it eventually. That's the whole point. A consumer's view isn't bizarre. It's bizarre to complain that these breakthroughs show up on Digg and five second later your life isn't any better.
Considering this is an education article, U of I would be correct. IU is only our rival in sports (didn't think rivalries were supposed to be so 1-sided though)
I got an early compact florescent light bulb many years ago (at least 10-15, probably more) and it hasn't burned out yet. One of the arguments for paying more was that they would last so long. I note, however, that the newer ones seem burn out more quickly and I don't hear the same kind of claims for how long they'll last. Is this planned obsolescence by the industry?

Yeah, because as it is ? LED's are horribly expensive and inefficient.
