abcnews.go.com — "This is a slap in the face of taxpayers," said Tom Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste. "To come to Washington on a corporate jet, and asking for a hand out is outrageous."Wagoner's private jet trip to Washington cost his ailing company an estimated $20,000 roundtrip...

In these executives' cases, I'm 100% with "not."

This is a joke. If a CEO makes $5K / hr (very roughly $10M / yr), his time is worth much more than the time wasted in airports. CEO's can work much more efficiently on a private jet, they don't have to wait in long lines at the airport. It's about safety AND efficiency. Sometimes they're on tight schedules and need to know their flights won't be delayed or cancelled. It's not all about luxury. The complainers here need to have a bigger picture. That being said, making $10million a year is ridiculous too...

First of all, I am not in support of bailing out the "Big 3" auto manufacturers. There is plenty wrong with the companies, however we should give the CEOs a break over the latest uproar over them using private jets to travel to appear before Congress. The implication was that they shouldn't have been incurring such expenses with their companies in dire straights. The argument would be laughable were it not so universally accepted by the media. Right or wrong, large company CEO compensation packages are generally massive. Large company CEOs also tend to travel regularly. Shareholders would be outraged (and rightfully so) if these CEOs spent a couple of hours each day dealing with the usual airline traveler's delays (waiting for check-in, security screenings, luggage, boarding, and late flights). It is actually a better use of their time and shareholder money to arrange for private flights. As an example, a CEO earning $10M annually (and plenty make more thanthat) is worth over $3K/hour (assuming 5, 12-hour work days each week). Avoiding the delays mentioned above for someone paid this much is surely worth the cost of the private flight.
