This is an extensive resource. I don't know much about creating visual effects, but I thought that you needed to be a big time studio to accomplish visual effects. Time to hit TPB... ahoy matey!

Andrew Kramer (Video Copilot) got hired by JJ Abrams to do the opening title sequences for both Fringe and Star Trek. He's a great guy to learn AE from.

I agree wholeheartedly. Take things like using colorama for alphas and motion-tracking tips from him. Try to do the tutorials, sure, but realize the best bits are some of the more "dry" parts of it./also works as a VFX Supervisor/Compositor on low budget films.

I've just done an entire feature (over 100 shots) of 4K visual effects on my macbook pro. No big studio required.
