Yes tutorials are very important to beguin with but I think what d4rkfantasy was trying to say was that once have have done a few you no longer need them, you can instead look at things and see how to create them without the need to follow a tutorial.
Everyone was a beginner once. Not everyone can afford to take a class, and not everyone has someone who can take time to teach them. Not to mention that there are no hard and fast rules. Photoshop is a tool, but there is a lot of art involved. I don't think I've ever seen two people create an effect the same way.I think everyone needs to remember that no one is born knowing everything, and that anything available that helps people learn how to use a tool is a wonderful thing. Eventually, we all break out on our own and discover new techniques, but you have to start somewhere.
These tutorials are far from "the best". Just an amalgamation of filters that make gawdy looking effects that have no practical uses. Sometimes, minimalism is best for newbies.
I think tutorials are a great way to start learning, sure beats $500 classes. When you follow a tutorial, your purpose is not to learn how to create the outcome of the tutorial, but learn of the potential use of a certain tool in photoshop. deusiah, as you mentioned in your post, they are "just kids", so why are you getting so fed up about it? they are still learning, and following the tutorial to create something they thought was hard and beyond their ability, excites them. of course, over time when they get more experience, they will look back and know how silly it was for them ... thats how it is, dont tell me you were not excited about your first creation in photoshop.
