This is good for beginners, but if you ever use Unix-like environments more than 10% of the time, then you need to be able to do this in your head. It's easy to learn though.
I don't know about the last you'll ever need... what if you wanted to add suid, sgid, or the sticky bit? That optional beginning fourth digit will trip you up every time... :)

or you could just work it out in your head in a couple of seconds, or write it out using rwx's which would probably also be quicker...
