I work for futureshop which is a Canadian company owned by bestbuy. I keep waiting for the day that we start selling ubuntu or computers preloaded with some flavor of linux. I hope this is a step in that direction. Knowing the attitudes of the type of people that shop there this is really the only way they will give Ubuntu half the chance it deserves. Edit: as well we will install it for only $100 cad.
People are not paying Best Buy $200+ because they can't do the install themselves, they are paying because they don't want to do it. I call it stupidity. Don't tear on Best Buy for capitalizing on stupidity.
The price of $20 is too low. But, better to get Ubuntu into the market and get exposure than not.Having Ubuntu for sale on the shelves helps increase Ubuntu Linux awareness.I would much rather see a longer support period and a higher price - or better still - a good, solid, reliable PC with Ubuntu pre-installed at a reasonable price. Most people don't have a clue that Ubuntu is "like Windows" - so, seeing a $20 box will likely look more like a single inexpensive software program to most people.Having Ubuntu Linux pre-installed ensures that Ubuntu works with all the PC's internal hardware components (video, sound card, and so on) and this will reduce user frustration. If you need to learn how to use Ubuntu Linux, have a look at my Ubuntu Linux Book Blog at:http://www.UbuntuLinuxBookBlog.comThis Ubuntu Linux Book is being developed as a "Blog to Book" project to create Linux training materials for Ubuntu Linux.
