Ubuntu's shutdown procedure is called "teardown". It basically doesn't wait for most of the processes in the system to save state before shutting down, only waiting for applications which really need the extra processing time. This makes it quite fast, for me at least, 5-6 seconds. If you have certain apps like mysqld running in the background expect a MUCH longer shutdown time, however.
