youtube.com— The didn't have a drum set, so they used random objects they found around the studio (like a champagne glass and a plastic mail bin).

You're comparing a spontaneous live recording to the studio edited/recorded Postal Service version? He probably didn't even prepare his voice before this; IMO as a singer, he did a pretty good job. Not excellent, but not bad either; probably as good as gibbard would do
...no, actually it was the other way around as far as I know. Iron & Wine did a cover of Such Great Heights."The song "Such Great Heights" was written by Ben Gibbard with friend Aaron Kaplan in 2003, according to an interview with Gibbard in Spin magazine."And Iron & Wine's cover came out on The Postal Service's Such Great Heights single.

I don't get what's so great about the PS original... sounds like bad dance music to me.

There seem to be so many great covers of Such Great Heights out there. My personal favorites include The Shins and this one, by an a capella group out of UNC Chapel Hill:http://digg.com/videos_music/Such_Great_Heights_A_Capella

Another reason why Australia is the coolest damn country ever. Ben Folds lives there.
