washingtonpost.com — A BellSouth exec is arguing for his company's right to degrade Internet services coming from people he doesn't like. If they like Yahoo, they should be able to slow down Google and so on. This idea presents a greater threat to the Internet than anything I've seen in a long time.

This is actually a pretty good idea. It would just use MPLS technology. These pipes are huge and there would not be a noticeable impact to any site other than the one that bought a spot in the more expensive queue. All Internet traffic is Best Effort anyway. So they are not implying that they are going to degrade anything, they are going to improve for a fee. This is as bad as Google charging for a better spot in search results. This is a good thing, progress. The backbones and networks cost a lot of money to maintain. If the providers can make more money in this way it will lead to bigger and cheaper ports for the end users.Seriously... go cry in your pillow.

I'm so sick of companies, organizations, and countries saying they are going to control the use of internet access. It's so dumb. The internet and the world wide web together make the only huge-unrestricted-easily accessed-medium where people can be as biased or objective as they want. Even if BellSouth is doing this for technical reasons, it's still dumb. The technology is out there and being used right now. It should be used to its fullest extent instead of most economical for the compnany. They make so much money anyways, why not just uncap connections and allow more access instead of pissing off customers and scaring them away?http://www.dpodgor.net

f**king Darwinian Capatolism like this is not welcome on my intarweb. Al Gore made the Internet - Get the f**k off his Internet, BellSouth. This is a worldwide service; not something the greedy corporate Americans should be able to restrict just to make MORE money. ISPs and Online buisnesses make enough as is.

BellSouth is a piece of s**t. They suck as an ISP. I rather use two tin cans and a bit of string than their DSL. The only people dumber than their Excecs are their tech support reps.

This is E*X*A*C*T*L*Y what the European Union feared could happen and why they wanted the United nations to help wrestle control of the Internet from U.S. companies. I hate to say it, but thanks to greedy bloodsucking bastards like BellSouth, SBC, etc. The EU may have been right afterall...

That's just puserb...in theory. Problem is, where I live BS is the only game for DSL. So theirgreediness is not optional. There is no free market....It's USSR, not US free market! And in this day and age, internet service is not a luxury. In my world it's a necessity. So much for your free market theory. I'm sure you feel similarly about gas pricing and the Big Oil companies so I'll add,for the record, that my comment applies to gas prices and the BS's in THAT world also.Gas is not a commodity, it's a utility: no less than electricity or phone service.

It's only a free market, when the market is open. Where I live, it's a B.S. monopoly. We have no choicefor DSL but damn B.S. So, personally, i think your theory is good, but you can eat it, too.And NO, I shouldn't have to move just because of B.S.!

Much of Bell South's market is not FREE! They are the only game in town. And if there does happen to be a reseller, he's buying (and selling) on B.S.'s termsthanks to recent FCC rulings. That's B.S. in Tennessee, anyway!
