discover.com— What made the Big Bang go bang? What was there before The Big Bang? Interesting article about what the universe might have looked like before The Big Bang...

I was actually thinking along the same lines as kmk2006. When I was reading the article, I was thinking perhaps this is something that we are not capable of understanding(not to say that we shouldn't keep trying). I have been thinking about this since I was reintroduced to the Hubble Deep Field Picture last week. So right now I am probably in WAY over my head!
The religious amongst us need to understand the difference between theory and faith.Theory = a supposition about the dynamics of an event, that, if given enough observation will be either disproved or proved over time. Up until that point it is constantly questioned, evaluated, modified and criticised. It is not right or wrong, the point is that IT CAN BE QUESTIONED WHEN OBSERVABLE EVENTS ARE AT ODDS WITH THE THEORY, WITHOUT RESTRICTION FROM AN UNELECTED ELITE.Time slowing down the faster you go was a 'theory' until they proved it with the eventual invention of space travel. All theories will either be proved or disproved at some point. This is at odds with religion which says you must accept everything on 'faith' without any direct proof.Faith = God did it, and there's no point in argueing about what, why, when and where. If you do, you'll either be damned for all enternity, stoned, tortured or imprisioned dependant on which particular point in history you happen to be in, or which religion you've enslaved yourself to, or which complete nutter is running that particular religion at that moment.Religion is pointless because it stops the individual from questioning what they see.Science is the only way forward because of its basic underlying principal that anything, ANYTHING can be questioned if you happen to have a different point of view.Religion - it's just people with voices in their head, brainwashing any vulnerable person they come into contact with. They all need sectioning.

Sorry, could you clarify, I am not sure I see the connection between my statement and its provincial nature.

String theory isn't even a theory: technically it's a hypothesis. It has no direct experimental evidence for it over conventional theories. But Brain Greene thought "theory" sounded cooler and would sell better, so the name stuck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory

I can't believe some people still trot out the "it's just a theory" furphy.http://www.notjustatheory.com/ kinda sums it up.

Just read the latest Alex Vilenkin's book:http://www.google.com/search?q=ISBN%3A+0809095238

just like evolution you mean...

so where did those universes come from?

It seems to me that pondering "what was before the Big Bang" and "where did God come from" are similar sorts of questions.
