dethroner.com — "These aren’t necessarily our favorite beers, but are suggestions for the budding beer aficionado to start working the palate without being so off-kilter that they’ll be impossible to enjoy. They are also, to our best ability, available nationwide, despite the fact that many of our favorite beers are available only regionally."

Here is my list1. La Fin Du Monde - A Quebecois beer that is my favorite, fruitier with a higher alcohol content, but great. Easier and easier to find. When I lived in Quebec, it was a standard.2. Seirra Nevada - For the general American Beer, Fat Tire for the more discerning3. Guiness - This is kind of a must, Boddington's if you want to branch out4. Red Stripe - hooray, beer!5. Czechvar - The central European beer, known as Budvar there though as it is brewed in Ceska Budejovice and is the true original budweiserHonorable MentionHeineken - regardless of popularity it is still really good and drinkableVictory Pils - Big American pilsners suck, that doesn't mean all American pilsners suck, kind of hard to findNegra Modelo - this and the beach and good mexican food is great

Sadly, can't find Yuengling where I'm at (in Kentucky). I keep hearing great things abour it, though.

This has to be dumbest article to be dugged. Any beer connoisseur will tell you that all the listed beers suck. Here's my list for good, relatively cheap beers1) Fat tire Amber (New Belgium, Fort Collins, CO)2) Kiltlifter (Four peaks, Tempe AZ)3) Widmer Hefeweizen (Portland, OR)4) Redhook ESB (Seattle, WA)5) Deschutes Black Butte Porter (Bend, OR)and now for some funky a bit more expensive beers6) Dogfish head Raison D'Etre (Delaware)7) La fin du Monde (Canada)8) Spaten optimator (Germany)9) Lefthand milk stout (?)

Um... Sierra Nevada is disgusting. Why people like it is beyond me. I'll try one like once a year just to see if my tastes have changed, and every time, it tastes like drinking a Christmas tree. It's awful!Franziskaner Hefeweizen is delicious. For the Heineken bashers... I'll say this: it never disappoints. It's not always GREAT, but I never regret cracking one open. It's a good staple beer.

@ elroyNo opinions on Heineken but I agree 100% with the Franziskaner recommendation, especially with a little Chambord. I also recommend Hoegaarden.

PokySharpy:The issue about which is the one you get at the pub when you ask for a Guinness, Guinness Draught or Guinness Extra Stout, has always confused me. I live in the US and I have had Guinness Draught poured out of the can, Extra Stout poured out of the bottle, and "Guinness" poured at the bar, all multiple times. I have always been convinced that the Extra Stout out of the bottle was inconsistent: sometimes it is really bitter, and sometimes really good. However, whenever the Extra Stout out of the bottle was actually good, I always thought it tasted more like what I got at the pub than a poured can of "Guinness Draught".So what is it supposed to be?

There are plenty of Civics that are race cars. Also, like in cars, a race car is not quantifiably better than a street car.Want to carry two people? street car.Want good mileage? street car.Want your tires to last more than 250 miles? street car (camber on race car ruins this)Want to be able to hear your radio over your engine? street car.Want A/C? street car.Want a glass windshield that doesn't become milky over time? street car. You're complaining a street car isn't a race car and saying that means the street car is inferior. It's not, unless you want what a race car provides.I like what I like. I don't see a problem with that. I don't see a reason to challenge my taste buds for what is essentially a chaser for food anyway. At least for me.

So glad to see Yuengling on the list. It's my favorite beer, especially for the price but this article is just one more slap in the face reminding me I can't get it anywhere since I moved to the west coast.

That doesn't surprise me at all. And confirms my belief that anything local is inherently uncool. You could import recycled piss from the International Space Station. And everyone would think "OMG! This is the best beer ever!!" ... because it's foreign to everyone. And ISS beer would reign king.At least until someone setup a brewery on the moon.

That's a poor list of starter beers IMO.Here are ratings of the beers they listed. I personally think both Guiness and Siera Nevada, although good beers, are overrated--however, since they're readily available they're the only two on the list that seem reasonable.http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/yuengling-traditional-lager/884/http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/sierra-nevada-pale-ale-(bottle)/365/http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/guinness-original---extra-stout/55/http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/dos-equis-xx-amber/224/http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/st-pauli-girl-special-dark/732/ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com are both good sites for beer ratings, reviews and info.
