apod.nasa.gov — Nearly 50 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, NGC 4013 was long considered an isolated island universe. Seen edge-on, the gorgeous spiral galaxy was known for its flattened disk and central bulge of stars, cut by silhouetted dust lanes. But this deep color image of the region reveals a previously unknown feature associated...

So is NGC 4013 five or six hours ahead of us here in Central Time? I can never get these things right!

My god, it's full of stars.

oh god its scary, the scale, the way the dust lane "catapulted", and the fact that it is dynamic and moving... the large structure. human knowledge does not even cover the whole universe, even we still wonders about the presence of dark matter and dark energy. I wonder if one day people would find God' existence

I think Jodie Foster said it best in the movie "Contact" when, speaking about God, she said, "What if science simply revealed that He never existed in the first place?" and also, "Occam's razor. It states that all things being equal, the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one. So what's more likely? That an all-powerful, mysterious God created the Universe, and decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that He simply doesn't exist at all, and that we created Him, so that we wouldn't have to feel so small and alone?" I am an Athiest, after studying many religions and researching astronomy it became apparent to me that the theory of God is simply not logical. Just my opinion of course.

In this argument, as elegant as it is, you are conveying that organized religion, and those who preach and practice it religiously (sorry, but that best describes it) KNOW of this "god" and are trying to explain it to the rest of "us": atheists, agnostics, and whoever else has doubt in a "higher being".You are conveying that we are blind. You are conveying that, for example, Pat Robertson knows...feels...experiences something he cannot explain.I do not agree with this.

no we are pretty much randomly distributed. If you look at the position of our galaxy, the motion of it with respect to the galaxy cluster we are in, (Virgil Cluster) and Earth's position within the Milkyway has led scientists to believe that there is nothing special int he placement or motion of our galaxy.

Lol! I love the comedy in this thread! Beautiful galaxy pic though! The arc in its subtlety is stunning! MATH ROCKS!!

I love beautiful, true-color galaxy images that show a lot of depth and details. this one fits the bill perfectly.
