techcrunch.com — The songs will only be free through the first few downloads, and will start to rise after that. But even at full price, listeners are getting quality music, DRM-free. Let’s hope other labels follow Nettwerk shortly. Market driven prices and no DRM = Music Nirvana.

Wow, you completely missed the point of this site--prices go up as popularity goes up. As popularity goes down, prices go down.I'd say RTFA, but you could have figured that out from digg comments alone.

@Riluske: I actually _was_ talking about free as in "speech".I support my favorite artists by buying their stuff (cd's, dvd's) and I think everyone should. (Though, personally, I'll never support anyone by buying s**tty mp3's with no real covers/artwork.)

Its working now with the zip files. I didn't buy BNL's cd. I got Rondo Brothers' "No time left on earth", after I saw they were on Deltron 3030 I just had to have it. I listened once and it wasn't all that impressive but, for 3 dollars not a huge waste of money.

Well, in an ideal world I could come back to the online music store and request a newly encoded set of my music, and select format and bitrate myself. Obviously you'd have to set some limits as how often you can do that; say, you can re-download three times within twelve months or so. That way, the need for backups would be gone as well.

they use iTunes to encode most if not all their mp3s (which doesn't impress me alot, but i can live with it for now)i just bought 25$ worth of credits to their site and everybody that can should do the same.

Barenaked Ladies are also I believe selling their CD on little USB sticks, so you can share with your friends more easily.

If only this was for a band that didn't suck ass so completely. Barenaked Ladies is objectively a crap band, not my opinion...FACT...deal with it.

There is some really good stuff on here. I had a good bit of credit left over so I bought some CDs that were less than a dollar just to see what it was like. I think the credit system is a good idea. You may want something that's 4 dollars but you buy a 5 dollar credit and end up spending that last dollar on some less known music. That way you get music for really cheap and then that band gets a little more exposure.

The only reason the music sharing networks are flooded with non-drm music is because we find ourselves in a transitional time where we have two systems of music distribution. While we have a CD selling market which sells non-DRM music, people will upload their songs for free. But guess what, I predict that we will see the end of CDs in that capacity within 5 years and all songs will be sold via the internet or through ipod shuffle like devices - fully with DRM. Suddenly it will not be as easy to rip or remove the DRM and then the online music selling industry will take in beaucoup cash selling online music. Just don´t make the mistake of taking this strange transitional time that we are living in now as representative of the norm.

Right now business execs in the offices of iTMS, Yahoo Music, Napster, etc. scramble in order to rip off this business model before Amie.St has a chance to upgrade their servers and come up with a better name than Amie.St. You can as to look sites in Russian which mention this theme: http://www.rolid.org http://www.se-ua.com
