treehugger.com — Sometimes an idea seems almost too good to be true. But this one is not. If there was a worldwide shift from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents, the drop in electricity use would permit us to close 270 coal-fired (500-megawatt) power plants that are contributing enormously to climate change.

way to miss the "f**king point" you fag. His comments were above the line... mine were below it. You fascists only want to use icky color fluorescents? fine.. buy what you like... AND I'LL DO THE SAME! Damn you and your silly bans

@ EochaidRiataThis is good to point out, but an important distinction is that none of these are bans on a specific type of technology. However, in this case it IS a specific ban of technology, one that could prevent further progress on making incandescents more efficient (this may not be reasonable; I'm no light bulb expert, but if possible I'm sure there is a market for it). I think the government should instead make minimum efficiency requirements for light bulbs but NOT ban a certain kind altogether.

You can only choose from the choices light bulb manufacturers offer to you, and soon the incandescent option won't be on the table. And we'll all be better off for it.

who said that I was in favor of burning coal? dumbass. why don't you fight against coal burning instead of for compact fluorescents. f**king idiot.

IF contractors for new housing installed only LED's in new homes, it would be a start. Another way to make a shift would be to offer a tax break to homeowners who make the switch. It's been working with appliances the last few years (energy star). Homeowner learns of tax break, seeks necessary purchase. As long as there is a market for the old stuff, it will be available. I don't think the government would step in and ban the old bulbs, because that would force everyone to foot the bill to have their fixtures replaced, thereby causing a financial burden on the citizens...oh, wait...

I just got a flyer in the mail, from Fairfax County, telling me that I cannot dispose of compact fluorescent bulbs in recycling, nor can I dispose of them in the regular garbage. In fact, IN FACT, they told me to be sure that I do not, DO NOT, allow them to be broken inside my house because of the mercury that they have. THEY TOLD ME TO BASICALLY GET RID OF OR NEVER BUY THEM!!! THEY SAID,..... AVOID CFL's DUE TO THE RISK OF HAVING A LOCALIZED HAZARDOUS WASTE SITE. Mercury is worse than any global warming risks. They close down elementary schools when a thermostat breaks, leaking mercury into the school, but you are expected to buy CFL's and just accept the mercury risks.Uh, Duuuuh!

There are trade-offs in life. I know that the average american, especially those growing up between the two continental divides, those in the midwest will not have any clue, but there are trade offs. Life isn't fair, it isn't about making eveyone feel comfortable or happy. LIfe is tough. You just need to grow up. Don't worry about "terrorism", don't let control freaks scare you into submission and fear "those terrorists", and STOP EATING DORITOS, OR MASSIVE BAGS OF CORN CHIPS. You have cankles because you eat s**t all your life. Eat whole foods, vegetables, fruits, meats, not processed s**t. It's you own damn fault. And do not fear the muslims. They are across an ocean, they cannot hurt you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I was focusing more on LED's I guess. Forgot to say that.

One by one, the artifacts of modern life will be banned. First light bulbs and cigarettes, then meat, eventually private property and we'll all be eating GMO plant gruel in FEMA camps with fluorescent bulbs burning our eyes. The environmentalists are leading us to a wonderful future indeed.

Quote from one of those arrested and then released with gagging order in New Zealand 'Terror Raid'"Its still all very murky, but what is clear is that the cops have used it as an excuse to harrass and raid as many different activist spaces & activist's houses as they can possibly think of. The net they've cast is simply MASSIVE."Can i state the obvious. Some of these people are working hard against state owned coal and this is massive state repression. In the wake of Al Gores peace prize, state brutality is protecting coal companies.Regards,Calvin
