this is so far down and no one with a life will read it, but....one girl at my work purchased a new HP for business, after trouble shooting vista for 3 days with no love, we returned it, and got a shiny new black macbook and a copy of xp and parallels. thanks vista, for giving us a reason to buy another mac.

MS made XP too well. There is nothing that cant be used on it and it will crash as much (even less) than vista. Nowhere in there did i see stability improvements, only "security"... which doesnt matter if you're a smart user.

@OBKenobiYou're not getting the point.DX9 has had compatibility code that allows games to be used in DX8 [7, etc.] cards. This compatibility code has also allowed legacy games to run on newer DX9 cards. Without this code, it would be impossible to run DX7 games on DX9 boards, and vice versa.In DX10, all that compatibility code that was in prior versions was removed. A cutting of the fat, if you will. This was done to start DX10 from fresh. Fresh API code, and architecture. The result a robust, and highly efficient API.Because of this, DX10 games only run on DX10 cards. They will not run on DX9 cards at all. So a DX9 version of the same game must be made if you want it to run in DX9 cards. The same with DX9 games on DX10 cards, they will not run. Because of this, Vista has both DX9 and DX10 APIs installed.As for the sound stack. It was completely rewritten to give low latency support natively in Vista This was done so that musicians can use Vista to record and mix music. Apple had the advantage in this area, and Microsoft wanted to compete.

I want to clarify since I can't edit the post anymore:DX9 games won't run on DX10 cards with the DX10 API alone, so that's why DX9 was included. In order for DX9 games to run on DX10 cards, you need the DX9 API installed. That's why Vista comes with both DX9 and DX10 APIs.

Computers are cheap. Got 4 Macs, A FreeBSD web server, 7 Linux boxes, and a computer running genuine Vista. They all have a purpose and get used regularly.Can anyone guess which computer will experience an OS change soon?

Not really... Those who have the experience and ability will continue to pirate and those who don't are so hooked that they'll lay down the cash. Microsoft knew what they were doing and used piracy as free promotion so everyone used their mediocre product. Even though great software exists for Linux and Mac people tend to "follow the herd" and feel that time and money invested in Windows means they can't easily use something else. The population really has no clue that some other operating systems (Mac, Ubuntu) can take less time to learn.I use all three major OS'es on a daily basis. Mac for multimedia and photo, Linux for gaming, and Windows because the company I work for has the "Windows is all that exists" mentality. That's their right- the only Windows machine is use is theirs and they maintain it.
