thinkprogress.org — The Senate just voted 56 to 44 on Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) amendment “requiring that active-duty troops and units have at least equal time at home as the length of their previous tour overseas.” The bill failed to garner the 60 votes needed to move forward.

Can anyone explain to me why the friggin' Democrats don't just say, "You want to filibuster more time off for the troops? Go ahead! We'll go play poker for a week or two. And when the public finally sees what assh**es the Republicans are to the troops they claim to support, you will have no leg to stand on. Get talking!"Bonus points if you can explain it without resorting to something trite, like "Dems are stupid/weak/clueless."As it stands, it keeps looking like the Dems don't have the votes, but they had plenty of votes to pass the amendment, just not the cloture vote to end debate. And if Bush was going to veto anyway, that's his choice. No wonder they're at 11%.

Well, the Republicans that voted this down just gave the Dems 6 months worth of negative campaign commercials. Go on the offensive, already.
