Because sci-fi has become all about special effects to most directors/actors/studios. Where as Kubrick and Lucas worked on getting the special effects up to a believable level to help support the story; today special effects are all you really need to make a sci-fi movie. Movie execs feel that they can take any crappy cheap sci-fi script, add tons of special effects and rake in the cash.
I watched Blade Runner at the perfect time and age.I loved that movie-it was a friggin' wild ride! Roy Batty is still one of those top villains in my book. That said-Blade Runner is another movie EVERYONE should watch when they turn 17.
