the thing everybody missunderstands about the aztecs is that they allways think thier gods were demonlike or brutal. In their minds, their gods (decendent from a singular creator) shed their blood and their life to create them for their sake, and this debt had to be repaid if the gods were to remain strong enough to keep the world turning. almost like if christians thought that passion plays had to entail actually crusifiction otherwise jesus's actually sacrifice would have been in vain.
i'm pretty sure you mean 40,000 as the spanish figure, cortez and others were inclined to exagerate figures to make their conquest seem more noble. the books i've reasd put that figure around 2000. i mean 40000 is allot more people to collect than 2000.
