guys, Japan's is in metric, ours is in English standard, duh.

Yes, congratulations on that, but why am I being buried?I stated:* An average of 4Mb does not seem to reflect reality in Australia for those who want bandwidth.* Some people challenged me claiming I must be getting 500MB + downloads (yes Telstra offers those plans for suckers who don't read fine print)* I pay about AU40 a month - which is about US32* I even listed my ISP (which I have no association with) for others to check that I am not full of s**t.Yes I could pay more and get more bandwidth (IPTV is not counted towards the cap but is an additional charge). Now Australia is not going to get the same level broadband as Paris for a couple of years yet. Anyone living here will know the politics and the fact there is a monopoly on the telecommunications infrastructure that inflates wholesale prices to cover legislated service level agreements to offer broadband and mobile services to small towns in nowheresville. Our data centre at work has a guaranteed 100MBps (yes capital B) pipe, but that is not reality for home connections yet.

sucks to be in the us, paying the inflated rates and getting subpar service.
vaxguruSep 2, 2007
Look at Australia ffs. This just pisses me off (yes, I'm Australian). We're behind Turkey, the Slovak Republic?!? Seriously, wtf. Australian broadband has become too much about politics and all sorts of other bs.

California isn't even close to being as dense as Japan. Tokyo is denser then NY and LA. You ever been to LA? Covers a lot of land area. What the hell are you thinking?you just make this stuff up in your mind before you post, then convince yourself that your points have even an ounce of validity?

Japan doesn't has a powerful server, though.

While Finland probably is on the higher end of the list, I really have a hard time believing we'd be on top of Sweden. There the government has spent huge sums of money to bring fiber optic connections to high density cities, which hasn't happened here (yet). I'd say the average connection speed is about 5mbps here. Well, at least it's not 20+mbps since that's usually the highest speed offered by ISPs (ADSL2+).Though I don't know if this graph just lists the highest speed available at reasonable prices, or what people actually have.

Interesting, my home country is not in the list :phttp://www.backpacksbags.us

I am moving to Ann Arbor, MI and am trying to find a good ISP. In Sydney, Australia I get 30 Mbps - Does anyone supply that sort of speed in Ann Arbor? I'd appreciate any advice.

Its a good time to move to Japan

Right behind ya, dude

Australia (here) is very regulated in telco services with large urban centres partly subsidizing services to small rural areas. It's a good system that stops people being left behind too far (within reason) and limits the cherry picking I hear about Verizon. We have the same geographical issues the central US states have except worse with huge population disparities. There's pretty heavy roll-out of ADSL2 with speeds starting at 8Mb and on the 2006-07 OECD charts we're the 4th fastest expanding - so stuff's happening.

Japan is almost nothing but major city. Canada is interesting but you'd need to know government policy on lower populated areas. Also isn't 99% of Canada's population in a 100km strip at the border of the US? If that's all they service it's easy to see how they're higher. America might also have some sort of equalization/subsidizing policy that stops people just servicing dense areas and leaving everyone else to rot. I dunno bout that tho.

well.....frankly speaking everyone here is right and wrong see the US is a purely capitalist country so that means absolutely no government participation in any commercial venture and this means that all ISP'S have to build their own infrastructure and since it is a duopoly one won't allow the other to share infrastructure and this causes a burden plus reduced profits a double whammy,The Japanese may be capitalist but not the staunch type like the americans Enter NTTDoCoMo and they change everything (for those who don't know NTTDoCoMo is a partly government owned telecommunications company the largest in Japan) through rigorous government reforms they are forced to open up their lines to private ISP's so that they can share and rent the infrastructure.......this creates a boom in the number of ISP's and the competition causes prices to fall like rocks thrown from the top of a skyscraper and through massive government subsidies they make fiber optic cables so that they can grab market share and monopolize the market by offering higher speeds but as soon as the project is completed throughout the country in comes the government and forces them to share even the fibre optic network prices fall even further and speeds rise this is the reason for the net boom in Japan another thing which many people miss was that the Japanese mainly visit Japanese language site as they are not very proficient in English these sites are(obviously!) hosted in japan this reduces the physical dsitance an since population density is high there, there are people everywhere and the people need telephones this requires more exchanges in a more lesser area and as we all know DSL speeds are dependent on the distance from the exchange this further speeds up things and add that to the high penetration aand this makes it profitable for anyone to start a internet (point of presence)

China is actually pretty fast in therm of raw speed, I just witness farmers in Guangdong area having 30mbps DSL where in Hong Kong they are still stuck to 8mbps...But due to their huge population and firewall, I doubt they can really fit in this graph.

I am really surprised to see name of Japan. I assumed that: for internet USA may be on top. But, sadly very far from no.1.
