arstechnica.com — Avatar's story is exactly what you expect from the trailers, but the visuals and 3D effects more than make up for the cookie-cutter characters. Sigourney Weaver adds soul to the film, and every dollar spent on this mammoth production is seen on the screen. Our review inside.

I just saw Avatar last night and that's a pretty accurate description. It's like watching a cartoon that looks real. But if you're okay with that and you liked Furngully then you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

Ok take your 3d glasses you got at the theatre, find a mirror. Close one eye and look at your face, then close the other eye. Explain this someone.

I'm no expert but: It must be that the mirror, in reflecting the light, changes its polarization as well. So you can't see your right eye with your right eye because any light would have (1) been emitted by a light-bulb, (2) bounced off your face and passed through the glasses at ONE polarization, (3) bounced off the mirror, and then (4) tried to pass through the glasses AGAIN at an orthogonal polarization -- which had already been filtered out on the first pass through the glasses -- so no light gets through.Alternatively, you are trying to look through TWO oppositely-polarized filters -- the one in the real world and the one in the mirror. The only light rays that pass through both filters are those that go from your real eye to your reflected eye. I hope that helps.

IMAX is still on film stock though (65mm I believe), not XD. I saw the movie not only in 3D, which is a $8 ticket, but in XD too!

Avatar IMAX 3D is the best movie I have ever seen!!!! Saw it last night and I am still in a trance. There has only been 3 other movies that have affected me like this: Star Wars episode IV (the original), Seven and The Matrix. It goes way beyond just "watching a movie", it is an experience and a very powerful one at that!! Some of the other "Digg-ers" are comparing Avatar with other movies like Aliens and Star Wars, let me tell you, there is no comparison!!! I loved those movies also but come on! This is a must see in the theaters and do yourself a favor, pay the extra money to see it in IMAX!!!!! I might go see it again today!!!!
