mjg59.livejournal.com — Matthew Garret, of the Ubuntu Technical Board, says "Automatix is actively dangerous to systems - ranging from damage to small items of user configuration, through removing user-installed packages without adequate prompting or warning and up to the (small but existing) potential to leave a system in an unbootable state."

I think it would be better to assist Automatix with its shortcomings, instead of knocking it. AX is one of the major reasons Ubuntu is so popular today. It brings newbies because they don't want to jump through hoops to get their software up and running. As an experienced Linux user, I know that apt-get is easy to use, but for a newbie, AX saves the day. They can learn apt-get when they are a little braver and more comfortable with the OS. Maybe someone should contact AX (Automatix) and assist with the project to make it stable and safe. That said, I think Linux has come a long way to being more user friendly. Installing software and drivers has become easier than ever in Ubuntu, but there is still room for improvement...In closing... If you have a problem with AX, then assist with the project.

But the problems Automatix "solves" have already been fixed in the mainstream. It used to be that I had to go Mplayers webpage, download and unpack the tarball and put the codecs in the correct folder. You haven't had to do this for years. Automatix was a "solution" looking for a problem. In reality, it was never solution to anything. It was an ugly f**king hack.

Yup. Backup data. Insert CD. Boot. Reinstall.

It is an Ubuntu Problem, Not Automatix. If the updater cannot 'ignore' the special 3rd party repos during upgrade, its lame.

I agree, Ubuntu in its current state can do the importnat stuff. Automatix messed up HAL for me twice on fresh installs.
