Pause before you bury and actually read my piece, please. There have been some posts on here insulting T-Pain. Alright, that's cool, I could see your common, uneducated Digg user doing that. Allow me to drop some knowledge on you, though, and I hope that you'll renege on your original position.Friends, T-Pain has done something quite spectacular. Had his name been Stockhausen, Lucier, or Cage, he'd find himself glossed up in the annals of musicology. Instead, since he's a popular hip hop artist, he's denigrated by those with false senses of superiority. You ask, "But what was T-Pain done that's so revolutionary?" T-Pain invented the *playing* of Auto-Tune. While others use it as a supplement to mask poor vocal aptitude, T-Pain puts the little technological curio front-and-center; he intentionally sings incorrectly and sets Auto-Tune to correct instantly, leading to a deliberately inhuman sound. You say, "Yeah, because he can't sing!" I say you aren't looking deep enough. The abuse of Auto-Tune in this fashion is rather ingenious. When others have perverted technology like this (from Luigi Russolo all the way across time to Tim Hecker and so on), they've been written about in peer-reviewed academic journals and ubiquitously praised. Yet, you want to call T-Pain just another mainstream hip hop artist?
