enterprise.linux.com — For several years, German automobile manufacturer Audi AG, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, has been steadily migrating its engineering systems over to Linux. The company hopes to finish the job in 2007 and have the bulk of its servers and workstations running 64-bit Linux by the end of the year.

This means Lamborghinis are also engineered on Linux, most likely.

@schestowitzHuh? As per the article they are migrating off of legacy Unix systems to Linux, not from Windows.

They said their servers were previously HP-UX.

@drizekActually BMW does use Windows in its 7-series. The iDrive system in the 7-series runs on Windows CE according to <a class="user" href="http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/idrive.htm.">http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/idrive.htm.</a> Here is a press release:<a class="user" href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2002/mar02/03-04bmwpr.mspx">http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2002/mar02/03-04bmwpr.mspx</a>I've also heard of numerous problems with the 7-series iDrive, for instance, it has a feature which turn the volume of the stereo up as you drive faster, but a few people have complained that the system has a bug and turns the stereo full volume, making them have to stop and get out because of the noise. But that is cleary bad coding on BMW's part.I attended a seminar on embedded versions of Windows a while ago where they talked about Windows Automotive edition. Check it out at <a class="user" href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsautomotive/default.mspx">http://www.microsoft.com/windowsautomotive/default.mspx</a>

No no! BMW _HAS_ had windows CE in them for a long time. Read all about the hilarious consequences! <a class="user" href="http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/hardware/0,39042972,39130270,00.htm">http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/hardware/0,39042972,39130270,00.htm</a>Of course they put it down to an "electrical fault" then proceed to talk about how they are investigating linux as an alternative :)

Don't know what happened there... o_OHere is the other link:<a class="user" href="http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-3513-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=672&messageID=11870&start=-1">http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-3513-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=672&messageID=11870&start=-1</a>

I suggest you check your facts. Microsoft enforced the usage of NT (and the 2000 when it came out) long before ME was released. Windows 95 was used for a short time by some employees, but 9x was never meant for a work environment. The no-9x policy had nothing to do with the quality of the 9x releases and everything to do with the lack of centralized administrative capabilities and permission systems.Furthermore, your claim of a "Brain-dead sales rep" with ME bringing down a "main server" for the conference reeks of being completely made up in an effort to embellish and already shaky story.

The designers use CATIA and the engine people ProE, if my memory serves me right. It was a long time ago that I did my co-op in Ingolstadt at the "Technischen Entwicklung".
