hothardware.com — There aren't many notebooks on the market these days with Intel's latest Core i7 mobile chip and the latest Mobility Radeon HD 5780 graphics on board, along with 8GB of RAM, at this price range. And there aren't many that will offer the kind of multimedia muscle as the G73. Asus appears to have hit the sweet spot with this hot new notebook.

I was asked to recommend a laptop to my friend for college that was decent for gaming and affordable, and I found that the MSI GX640-098US was a pretty decent buy; it went for around $1100 and just had a slightly less powerful CPU & GPU than the Asus one by default (i5-430M and ATI 5850). Initially I was thinking of an Asus hands down, based on the specs for the price, but it seemed based on the reviews that people had too many issues with them.

I still love my g60vx from Bestbuy last year. $999. Just saw the i5 version today at BB for $809 clearance. doh!

Because I'm a 3D animator and I needed a killer laptop.

Not really. the m11x is only 800 bucks, it's got a ton of ram, decent processor and a decent video card, all netbook size. It's actually the only reasonable product alienware sells.

Oh ok, that makes sense then

The HD 5870 Mobility in this thing is about equivalent to a desktop HD 5770. Not quite HD 5870 fast, but still fast.

A friend of mine bought this recently... it's pretty nice, but it's basically the stealth bomber of "laptops" -- f**king huge and angular.I've had mediocre experience with Asus after I bought an F50SV... great specs, and only $800, but it seems fragile, and the sound card f**ked up after maybe 4-5 months of moderate use (sound came out of speakers and headphones at the same time). I sent it in for repair, and received it back in about three weeks, but after that the video card was overheating and needed more thermal paste, which above-mentioned friend added. If Asus is still around when/if I finally buy another laptop, I won't be buying it from them unless they get their s**t together on their lower-priced products and their customer service.I'm still a desktop fan... if I can't replace/upgrade components of a system without buying a new motherboard, it's pretty stupid to invest much money in it.
