You draw the same bizarre connections that a PR person would. High scores don't necessarily translate into sales. On your Borderlands example, sales don't translate into it being a good game. Some defy both... assassins creed sold like crazy and received good scores by publications influenced by being allowed to have the first review out.
Kotaku does not give out scores when they review games. Instead their writers list what they love and hate about the game they are reviewing. I love this approach and always read their reviews.
This only seems to suggest that scores by metacritic should be entirely removed.Instead of giving a film 1/5 or 5/5 or whatever... why not just... say "you'll probably like this game if you are into button mashing beatemups"or "you'll probably dislike this game if you tire of grinding".Summarise it into something short and sweet, about what kind of person would like/dislike the game!
