twinklyjesus....my father was on the USS Nevada. They most certainly did see the mushroom cloud during WWII (not the one in this particular picture) and yep my dad died in 1974 (age 49) from cancer. The picture that is shown here was when these ships were decommissioned and used for testing (radiation,etc).
